Lower School
The Lower School strives to instill within each child a balance between individual development and commitment to the community. Our invigorating and supportive environment stimulates and promotes ethical, social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth in every student. In a program which recognizes each child’s unique timetable and needs, the measure of success is in the ongiong process rather than the finished product." - Lower School Philosophy
Welcome to the Lower School at Rye Country Day where learning is exciting! Our program, which is comprised of pre-kindergarten through grade four, promotes active learning, hands-on exploration, and discovery. During these years children are innately curious, energetic, and creative, and we support their growth in a stimulating and nurturing environment.Knowing that social interaction is important for cognitive growth, our teachers invest time building a learning community in which students feel comfortable taking risks. We pride ourselves on knowing our students and having high expectations for them. Although we celebrate the individual student with his/her unique talents, we encourage cooperation and collaboration. We firmly believe that the process in learning is as important as the product.
Our faculty and staff are dedicated professionals who understand child development. Knowing the skills needed at each developmental level, our teachers create exciting units of study that engage the learners through many modalities: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. We challenge them to think critically and solve problems cooperatively, as they build a firm foundation of basic skills needed for future learning.
Wanting our students to be contributing members of the 21st century, we connect student learning to real-life situations, which motivates and empowers our students to make a difference in their world. Our challenge is to foster a love of learning in our students, thereby creating confident, independent, and life-long learners.
As you browse through these pages you will see that our Lower School promotes a respectful learning community. We celebrate diversity, appreciate our similarities and differences, and feel a common bond with one another.
I hope you enjoy your tour through our Lower School community.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Walsh Lower School Principal
